Coalition looking to reduce drug, alcohol use (08/15/11)
news@standard-democrat.com SIKESTON -- According to Students Against Destructive Decisions, over 25 percent of people aged 12-20 drank alcohol last month, with over 6 percent of that same population using marijuana. The Southeast Missouri Drug Free Communities Coalition is working to reduce those numbers. According to Jane Pfefferkorn, executive director of Mission Missouri in Sikeston, the main goal is "to change the environmental message that kids receive about using alcohol, etc."...

One killed in accident; driver flees (08/15/11)
POPLAR BLUFF -- Authorities are searching for the driver in a hit-and-run fatal accident Sunday in Butler County. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports at 9:50 p.m. Alexander C. Metzing, 18, was operating a motorized scooter on Missouri 142, three miles south of Poplar Bluff, when he slowed to make a right turn and was struck in the rear by a dark blue truck...
