SIKESTON - Another drenching rain came to Sikeston and vicinity Wednesday morning, providing additional moisture for growing crops. The fall amounted to 1.30 inches in the city, Harry Young, weather observer, reported.
SIKESTON - The Missouri Air Pilots Association, with some 40-60 planes, is expected to touch down at the Sikeston Airport around 4:30 p.m. today. The organization is touring Arkansas and Missouri as part of its annual air tour.
JEFFERSON CITY - Lyle C. Bird of Matthews was appointed today first district judge of the New Madrid County Court. Gov. John M. Dalton said Bird will replace the late Guy Calvin. Like Calvin, Bird is a Democrat.
CHARLESTON - Missouri 10th District Rep. Bill Emerson (R-DeSoto) and Rep. John Myers (R-Ind.) joined Mississippi County officials last week for a tour of the St. John's Bayou-New Madrid Floodway Project.
SIKESTON - Construction has begun on the elderly housing project that will be located on Cresap Place next to the Heritage House.
SIKESTON - A brief ceremony on Sept. 9 will complete the swearing in of James Leist, the new Department of Public Safety director. New Madrid Street in front of City Hall will be closed for about an hour and a static display of DPS vehicles will allow residents a chance to view the latest equipment.
SIKESTON - The city council approved an ordinance establishing the tax rate for the fiscal year 1991-1992 at 74 cents per $100 assessed valuation Wednesday morning. Assessed valuation before adjustments is $109,649,782, compared to $107,387,603 last year.
