POPLAR BLUFF -- Portageville basketball coach Jim Bidewell will be inducted into the Poplar Bluff Sports Hall of Fame today.
Bidewell has coached the Bulldogs to four consecutive Missouri State 2A Basketball Championships.
He had undefeated 31-0 seasons in 1991 and 1993, and he was Missouri Class 2A Coach of the Year both of those years.
"I'm definitely honored to be chosen, especially since its from my home town," said Bidewell. "I still have roots there."
Voting ballets were sent out to Poplar Bluff sports alumni. Tallies decided on the inductees. Bidewell will be inducted after the banquet, which will be at the fifth and sixth grade center. The meal will start at 7 p.m.
"It was a surprise," said Bidewell. "I've been coaching for 20 years. You look back, and it doesn't seem that long."
Bidewell's teams are the only in the state to win four straight titles.
"A lot of my success is due to a lot of other people," said Bidewell. "The kids are the main part of that."
Bidewell has a career record of 378-121 at Portageville. His teams have won 11 Bootheel Conference Championships and 10 Class 2A District 1 titles.
In 1972, the coach earned All-America honors after leading his 11-12 year old basketball team to a second place finish in the AAU National Championships.
Bidewell lettered in football, basketball and baseball at Poplar Bluff High School. He is a graduate of Arkansas State University.
