Poet's response

With My Head Raised High

Once again I'm called To carry my stars and stripes proudly.

Yet I'm not afraid,

Because my country needs me.

Yes, I've been here before

And I proudly raise my head,

Thrust my chest forward And march with dignity and honor.

Many seek to destroy the colors For whom I stand,

And are trodden beneath my glory.

Yes, I cry when my companions

Fall beneath me.

I brush away the tears

And with pride, I march onward.

Yet I'm not discouraged

And I'll never drop my head in shame.

I'll carry my country's colors

Over the oil-slicked sea

And smoke-filled skies

Until all men are free.
