Eighth graders top Charleston

Tuesday, January 13, 2004

SIKESTON -- Sikeston's eighth grade basketball team rolled over Charleston on Monday night, 62-36.

Tommy Strong scored 20 points and Brandon Washington added 18 as the Bullpups improved to 3-5 on the season.

"I think we're starting to figure out who needs the ball," said Sikeston coach Kevin Self. "(Charleston) lost a couple of post people, and Tommy and Brandon were able to really score at will down in the blocks."

Sikeston had several turnovers in the first half, allowing Charleston to stay in the game.

The Bullpups solved the problem in the second half, outscoring the Bluejays 20-9 to pull away.

"When our guards figured out not to dribble through the press, we didn't turn it over as much," said Self. "That made the difference. In the second half we did a good job of taking care of the ball and finding the open man."

Behind Strong and Washington, Garrett Limbaugh scored nine. Charleston was led by Tony Riggins with 11.

Sikeston also won the B-game, beating the Bluejays 34-18. Chase Johnson paced the Bullpups with 13 points and Justin Deere had nine.

For Charleston, Chase McClendon scored six. Sikeston's eighth grade team will travel to Kennett tonight.

POPLAR BLUFF -- Sikeston's ninth grade basketball team defeated Notre Dame 60-36 in the first round of the Poplar Bluff Tournament on Monday night.

Sikeston outscored Notre Dame 15-11 in the first quarter, 14-13 in the second, 14-2 in the third, then 17-9 in the fourth.

Julian Beard led the way with 18 points.

Blake Taylor and Tarryl Booker each scored 13.

For Notre Dame, Richard Marquart led the way with 12.
