CAPE GIRARDEAU - The Charleston Bluejays collected their 12th win of the season Tuesday night by whipping the Notre Dame Bulldogs 66-40.
The 'Jays have lost only once.
In the opening minutes of the contest, Notre Dame came out and looked like they could compete with Charleston on both ends of the floor.
The Bulldogs were able to build a small lead early while Charleston struggled. Charleston could only muster points from the charity stripe in the early going while Notre Dame's Bryce Willen canned eight quick points.
Ashton Farmer hit a layup with 3:35 left in the first quarter for Charleston's first bucket. The momentum in the game really changed at that point as the Bluejays tied the score at 10 a minute later on a Marcus Biles' bucket.
Charleston went on to take a 16-12 lead into the first period.
The second quarter proved to be disastrous for Notre Dame as the superior Charleston defense stifled their offense. Farmer's presence forced the Bulldogs to alter every shot, and Charleston held Notre Dame to only four points in the period.
Charleston collected 20 in the stanza to take a commanding 36-16 lead at the intermission.
"I thought we played well. The kids came out and were focused. The first group came out and played hard in the first three quarters and I was pleased with the effort," said Charleston coach Danny Farmer.
Notre Dame did a little better job of penetrating the Bluejay defense in the third quarter, and managed 14 points. Charleston tallied 23 to lead by a 59-30 count going into the fourth quarter.
With the big lead, Charleston was able to substitute freely in the final frame. Notre Dame outscored Charleston 10-7 in the quarter.
Ashton Farmer led all scorers in the contest with 18 points. Trentez Lane netted 11 and Marcus Biles and Joshua Strayhorn each got 10.
Notre Dame was led by Willen's 14 and Jeremy Brinkmeyer's 10.
Charleston will travel to Sikeston on Friday night to take on the Bulldogs.
