SIKESTON -- Sikeston's volleyball team reached the .500 mark Thursday evening, making quick work of a struggling Chaffee squad in straight sets, 15-4, 15-10.

"Chaffee's had some problems the last couple of years," explained Sikeston coach Steve Beydler. "The girls came out with some real good intensity. I was pleased with the whole team."

Fleming Silverthorn served up 10 points with four aces, and finished with 10 assists. She also contributed a kill and five digs.

"I was really glad to see that," said Beydler. "Fleming has struggled with her serving the last couple of matches, and it was good to see her getting the ball over and down so well."

Summer Ray served two points with one ace, had three digs and one kill. Jamie Medlin led the offense, finishing with five kills.

"Tonight, (Medlin) had a number of good plays on the front line," said Beydler. "I was very pleased with her also."

Joy Daniel was in usual form, serving up five points with four digs, three kills, one assist and one block.

Stefanie Mason served five points with one kill. Emily Slaten served one point and had 11 assists. Beth French served seven points with five digs, and Rachael Vining contributed one dig.

"Beth and Fleming had a good night digging the ball up, and Joy Daniel is always strong on the front line when she's playing middle," said Beydler. "She had a couple of huge hits. Emily Slaten and Fleming did a good job putting the ball up for us. Stef Mason got an opportunity to play some back row and serve some, and she did a real good job with that. And Summer Ray is always a constant when it comes to playing good defense and getting the ball up."

Sikeston (10-10-1) will host Dexter on Monday.

"We want to maintain this above-.500 thing and keep going," said Beydler.

JUNIOR VARSITY

Sikeston won the junior varsity match 15-4, 15-6.

Maggie Pfefferkorn served 12 points, Paige Kaiser had eight and Erin Box contributed six.

Offensively, Sikeston saw three kills from Kaiser, two from Berneatress Hunt, two from Lindsey Davis and one from Audra Wooley.

"The girls really worked well together," said Sikeston coach Nancy Miles. "We were communicating and moving well."

The junior varsity team (5-7-1) will host Caruthersville and NMCC for a junior varsity tournament on Saturday. The event is for freshmen and sophomores, and will start at 10 a.m.
