PORTAGEVILLE - Georgia Marie Lester, 100, died Aug. 21, 2001, at Hermitage Garden in Oxford, Miss.
Born April 16, 1901, in Fairfield, Ill., daughter of the late George B. Cox and Mae Alice Self Cox, she was a former resident of Essex and was a graduate of Dexter High School. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from Arkansas College and completed graduate work at the George Peabody College for Teachers and the University of Missouri. After graduating from Stephens College, she was an English and Latin teacher at Carleton, NB High School and at Dexter High School. A member of the local Methodist Church, where she had been a Sunday school teacher in all departments for many years, she was a lifetime member of the WSCS Women's Group and the church prayer group. She lived in Portageville, where she was a member of Chapter GU of PEO Sisterhood, since 1926.
In 1949, she married Shelby Lester who preceded her in death in January 1990.
She was also preceded in death by one stepdaughter, Martha Ann Harris; and a stepgrandson, Dr. Larry Lester.
Survivors include: one stepson, Elza Lester of Oxford; three grandchildren, Susan Eftink of Oxford, Shelby Fay Harris of Chesterfield and Sally Ann Harris Jackson of Memphis, Tenn.; and seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. Friday at DeLisle Funeral Home. Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ed Rhodes and the Rev. Leland Butler officiating.
Burial will follow in the Little Prairie Cemetery at Caruthersville.
