SIKESTON -- Local businesses and the Sikeston Department of Public Safety are working together to help prevent the illegal sale of alcohol to minors.
On Tuesday, local business owners and managers met with officers from Sikeston DPS in response to a sting operation conducted last week. During the sting 14 out of 17 businesses sold alcohol to underage informants.
At the meeting, a joint agreement was reached between the businesses and DPS to combine forces in an effort to stop the underage purchase of alcohol in the city limits of Sikeston.
DPS Director Drew Juden said there will be a joint effort today at local establishments by DPS personnel to check identifications randomly at the door and inside establishments.
At a later date there will be further investigations within the establishments to target the attempted purchase of alcohol by minors.
"We will continue to work in a cooperative effort between establishment management and members of DPS," Juden said.
Anyone presenting or possessing a fake ID or attempting to purchase alcohol underage will be arrested immediately and charged.
