SIKESTON - Three Missourians were among 35 Army men who were granted the Legion of Merit, the War Department announced today. One was from Benton. He is Cpl. Emory Caldwell, who devised special equipment to strengthen cargo trucks battered by rough terrain in New Guinea from Dec. 18, 1942, to Oct. 18, 1943, "greatly aiding in keeping the trucks in operation."

SIKESTON - Byrum Lucy has joined the armed forces and sold the Band Box Cleaners to James R. Ralph and J.W. Stone.

SIKESTON - Fire at 411 Lee St. Friday night almost destroyed the interior of the house. The residence is occupied by the Cleon McAnally family, but there was nobody home during the fire.

SIKESTON - The certification of Sikeston as a five-star community was announced at the Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce 34th Annual Banquet Tuesday evening.

EAST PRAIRIE - A new ISO rating has city officials elated and brings a promise of reduction in insurance costs to residents and business owners in the city. "We expected or rather hoped the ISO rating would go down, possibly from an 8 to a 7 rating. But, when the evaluation came with a 6 rating, WOW!," remarked a jubilant Fire Chief Danny Lafferty.


CHARLESTON - Chosen in the 3 and 4-year-old category for Charleston's Dogwood-Azalea Festival Little Prince and Princess pageant were Tyler McCann and Caitlin Lankheit. The youngsters rode in Saturday's parade. Sharing their "carriage" with runners-up in the 5- and 6-year-old pageant Little Princess Katie Luehmann and Little Prince Daniel White.
