Meth smoker arrested

SIKESTON - A Benton man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after he was caught smoking methamphetamine near the Sikeston Alternative School.

According to reports from the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, a DPS narcotics officer saw Stephen Gold, 47, smoking methamphetamine on a parking lot behind a Rhodes 101 convenience store on North Main Street, which is near the school property.

The officer contacted DPS for assistance as he kept watch on the suspect. Gold was then stopped for improper vehicle registration, at which time he was arrested for possession of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a concealed weapon.

Scott County Prosecutor Paul Boyd's office has charged Gold with possession with intent to distribute and unlawful use of a weapon. Bond for Gold is set at $30,000.

Gold remains in custody in the Sikeston holding facility, where he is awaiting transport to the Scott County Jail.
