SIKESTON - A glider demonstration, crop-dusting exhibition and barbecue chicken and ribs dinner will highlight the third annual Aviation Day to be held Thursday at the Sikeston Memorial Airport. More than 15 airplanes, ranging in size from small one-engine pleasure craft to twin-engine luxury planes, will be on display. Aviation Day is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.
SIKESTON - Four pots of marijuana were seized at a Lora Street residence Wednesday following surveillance by three Department of Public Safety officers. A suspect was arrested after he was spotted taking one of the pots from the back yard into the home, according to DPS. The suspect is in custody at Sikeston City jail, pending formal charges of cultivating marijuana. There were eight plants in the pots, ranging from 1 foot to 3 1/2 feet tall. According to police, the plants would not have been ready for harvest until fall.
CHARLESTON - Arson has been cited by the state fire marshal as the cause of a fire reported at 9:40 p.m. Thursday at 213 N. Elm St. On arrival of fire personnel, Dennis Morgan, 47, occupant of the structure, was found hiding in nearby bushes. A spokesman for DPS said Morgan was apparently intoxicated and has been charged with arson. He remains in custody at the Mississippi County Jail.
