Cotton to speak Thursday

SIKESTON - A Veterans' Day ceremony will begin at 9:45 a.m. Thursday at the Sikeston High School Field House.

Participating in the program will be the SHS band, choir and orchestra along with area veterans from the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post. The colors will be posted by the Sikeston Department of Public Safety.

Guest speaker, USAF Maj. Brent A. Cotton is stationed with Headquarters 8th Air Force at Barksdale Air Base in Louisiana. Cotton has been deployed all over the world, including England, South Korea, Alaska and Saudi Arabia. He will deploy back to the Persian Gulf region in January.

He is currently the chief of operations law at Barksdale, where he oversees 8th Air Force combined Air and Space Operation Center activities, Operation Law training, judge advocate and paralegal aerospace expeditionary force deployments and monitors exercise commitments within the 8th Air Force.

Cotton has received numerous awards and decorations, including the Global War on Terrorism Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.

The son of Deidre Harber Cotton, formerly of Sikeston, and grandson of Warren and Jewel Harber of Sikeston is a member of VFW Post 3174 and American Legion Post 114 in Sikeston. His wife is the former Tracey Foard of Salt Lake City, Utah.

Following the ceremony, veterans and their families are invited to the American Legion Post home on South Kingshighway, where the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary will serve lunch at 11:30 a.m.
