Thirty-three years ago Clayton Bohannon and his wife, Ruby, purchased Coleman's Bar-B-Que. After 10 years as Coleman's the name was changed to Bo's in 1981.
In 2002, the Bohannons expanded their holdings with the Malone Avenue Grill. After trying to manage two facilities, the family decided to take the best from both worlds and the two restaurants merged to become Bo's Bar-B-Que and Grill.
"Time was running out on our Bo's facility lease," said Randy Bohannon, co-owner. "We also needed more space to serve Bo's customers."
The family decided to move next door to 1617 E. Malone Avenue.
Bohannon points out the positives of combining the restaurants include an expanded kitchen, express dining, full-service dining, separate smoking and non-smoking areas and increased catering capabilities. "We currently have a larger restaurant with two areas. The express dining area and the full-service dining area," added Bohannon. "We want convenience to be the key."
Keeping the tradition of Bo's alive has been utmost in the planning according to Bohannon. The menu has carried over from Bo's with the addition of steaks and pasta from the Grill menu. As always there will be homemade chocolate, strawberry and coconut pies available and breakfast is served all day.
"We are also excited about expanding our catering services," said Bohannon. with a larger kitchen more food production can be handled allowing Bohannon to cater off premises to groups of any size. The banquet rooms include one with seating for 100 and a smaller room seating 30.
The only obstacle encountered in the merger has been where to place the drive-in, Bohannon said. He plans to have it up and running this month with customers able to call ahead to 472-4745 to place their order for pick up.
Currently Bo's Bar-B-Que and Grill is open Monday through Saturday from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sundays from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m.
