SIKESTON - Misses Grace Marie Sitzes, Louise Jackson and Margaret Anthony left Thursday for Columbia, where they will enter Missouri University.

SIKESTON - Proof of three to seven-pound sweet potatoes by the bushel can be found in the garden plot of Nafis Runnels. He has 80 plants. As many as six large potatoes and many smaller ones were found under most of them.

20 years ago

SIKESTON - Greg Tate drove for extra yardage against New Madrid County Central in Thursday's season-opening freshman football game. Tate scored on a 22-yard run and Jason Wheatley scored two touchdowns to lift Sikeston to a 20-18 victory. NMCC, which trailed 20-6 at halftime, got touchdowns from a kickoff return by Pat Johnson and a 53-yard run by Kirk Palmer.

SIKESTON - The Safe Sets defeated the Sandblasters, 15-2, 15-4 to win the fifth annual Rotary Park Co-ed Beach Volleyball Tournament Saturday. The Safe Sets went through the six-team double elimination tourney undefeated. Charlie Scott presented the first place trophy to the Safe Sets. The team consisted of: Joy Cook, Barb Watkins, Ginger Lingle, Ken Cantrell, Randy Keen and Ron Hewitt. The team mascot was Chad Scott.

MATTHEWS - Matthews Community Day Saturday featured a variety of activities. The day started with the Community Day Parade and continued with such events as a bake sale, lip sync contest, sack race, mule rides and pageants. The day ended with a community dance later that evening.
