Sikeston General Oil Co. founder dies at 76

SIKESTON -- Robert Marvin "Bob" Jenkins, Sr., 76, of Sikeston died March 31, 2004, at his home.

Born Oct. 17, 1927, in Cleveland, Ohio, son of the late Harold and Irene Jenkins, he spent his childhood in Cleveland, Ohio, New Jersey and St. Louis. He served with the U.S. Army in Japan in 1946-47. Following discharge from the Army, he attended the University of Missouri, graduating in 1952. He founded the Sikeston General Oil Company in 1967 and operated that business until his retirement in 1999.

A former member of the Sikeston Kiwanis Club, he was also a Boy Scout leader and member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and the Missouri Oil Jobbers Association. He was an executive board member of the Sikeston Country Club Senior Golfer's Association.

In 1969, he married the former Dana Jensen Garner who survives of the home.

Other survivors include: three sons, Robert M. Jenkins Jr., Scott D. Jenkins and Nick Garner, all of Sikeston; two daughters, Linda Woods of Sikeston and Melissa Meeker of Plano, Texas; three granddaughters, Brittany Jenkins, Kelsey Jenkins and Madison Meeker; one grandson, Clayton Meeker; one sister and brother-in-law, Jennie and G.H. "Bus" Entsminger of Columbia; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his mother and father-in-law, Marvin and Kathleen Jensen of Sikeston; and one brother-in-law and sister-in-law Michael Jensen and Cheryl Jensen of Sikeston.

Beloved father and husband, Mr. Jenkins had a lifelong love of airplanes and flying culminating in the purchase of a small plane in which he and son Scott spent many happy hours. He was an avid traveler and, along with his wife, had spent many trips around the globe.

He was a loyal friend who will be missed by all who knew him.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel.

A private graveside service for family members will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
