SIKESTON - First checks for the Christmas Tree of Lights, a fire department sponsored project to raise funds with which to buy toys for Christmas distribution, were received by L.D. Ramsey, chief of the volunteer fire department from the Bank of Sikeston and the auxiliary police Friday night. The first lights were lit on the towering tree.

SIKESTON - The Sikeston Community Choir will present its 16th Annual Christmas Concert Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church.


CHARLESTON - Only two candidates filed for the one position on the Charleston City Council prior to Tuesday's 5 p.m. filing deadline. H. Terry Rowe, currently serving as mayor, had filed earlier for re-election to the three-year post and John Stephenson filed Tuesday. Since only two candidates filed, there will not be a primary election Feb. 7. The seat will be filled in the April 3 city election.

NEW MADRID - Greenery ranging from yards of pine roping to holly and mistletoe will be featured at the Hunter-Dawson State Historic Site during their annual Christmas open house.

SIKESTON - A donation of more than $2,100 was made by the First Baptist Church in Sikeston to the Standard Democrat Community Christmas Campaign. The money was raised through the church's Living Christmas Tree Pageant and will be used to purchase food, clothing, blankets and other items for needy local families.
