Tuesday, December 9, 2003

CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Mary "Granny" Enderle Spalding was guest of honor for a 100th birthday party Nov. 22 at the Lutheran Home, where she is now residing.

Born Nov. 22, 1903, she has lived in Southeast Missouri her entire life. The daughter of the late John and Louise Enderle attended St. Augustine School in Kelso and was one of nine children.

In February 1925, she married Joe Spalding and they lived in Benton, where they owned and operated Spalding Trucking. They also owned and contracted school buses for the area. In addition to being a school bus driver before her retirement, she was active with the 4-H Club and senior citizens.

Her husband passed away several years ago.

Their children are Ida "Susie" Roper and Mary Alice Schweer of Benton; and the late Blanche "Sally" Asmus, Martha Ann Dempster and Joe "Amos" Spalding. Mrs. Spalding now has 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
