NEW MADRID - Sheriff W.L. "Cowboy" Ramsey of New Madrid County announced today that he has appointed Walter Ivy, chief of police of Risco, as a deputy sheriff to fill the position left vacant by the slaying of Billy Myers.

SIKESTON - Area agricultural experts said the Payments-in-Kind program was successful and helped keep some farmers from suffering a devastating loss during the drought-stricken 1983 growing season. According to Kenneth E. Vowels, executive director of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation office in Benton, about 330 of Scott County's 16,045 farms participated in the program.

SIKESTON - As the Community Christmas Campaign begins its 15th year in Sikeston, residents are asked to reflect on their plans for Christmas. Beginning today, the community will be introduced to families who are in desperate need of help this Christmas. Each family has been screened by the Division of Family Services. Their stories are real, their needs are genuine.

CHARLESTON - Herbert E. Llewellyn Jr. has been in Charleston about a week and has determined "the city is full of nice, friendly people. Everyone has been most helpful and most everyone has invited my family to church." Llewellyn officially began his new position as city manager on Nov. 22.
