SIKESTON - The poster contest conducted in the school in observance of Book Week, Nov. 12-16, was closed Friday and the judges evaluated them and made the awards Saturday. Rosella Yarbrough was given first prize.
NEW MADRID - A total of $452 has been turned in by workers for the New Madrid Community Fund, according to a report from Dick Bartlett, campaign chairman for the Community Fund this year. Goal for this drive is $6,500. The money is to be divided among seven participating agencies.
SIKESTON - Work to alleviate the asbestos problem in the Sikeston school system will continue after approval for the project was granted by members of the Board of Education Tuesday. On Nov. 14, the school district received a report from Industrial Laboratories Inc. which showed that ceilings of Morehouse Elementary, Southwest Elementary and buildings, A, B, C, G, and E at the high school contained fibers of the fireproofing material which has been linked to cancer.
MORLEY - Semona Penrod knows her task as girls basketball coach at Scott County Central High School will be a tough one. Penrod, a 1981 Scott Central grad and formerly an assistant coach at Southern Baptist College and the head coach at Greenville High, returns home to step into the shoes of the legendary Danny Farmer, the winner of several state championships and one of the top girls coaches in the state.
SIKESTON - The Sikeston freshman basketball team opened its season Monday night with a convincing 47-36 victory over Cape Girardeau Central. Sikeston opened with intense defense and potent offense.
