NMCC loses to Gideon; Charleston downs S.C.

Wednesday, August 29, 2001

NEW MADRID - The New Madrid County Central Lady Eagles volleyball team lost to Gideon on Tuesday in their season opener, 12-15, 9-15.

"We had some first game jitters a little bit," said NMCC head coach Sonya Pixley. "I know the ability is there, but we just didn't put it together. Gideon has improved a lot. They've got good hitters and good passers -- they're a scrappy team. I think we underestimated them a little bit."

NMCC's junior varsity lost 7-15, 10-15.

Further details from either match were not available at press time.

NMCC will play at Scott City today at 6:30 p.m.

Charleston over Scott City

In the first match, Charleston was trailing 14-3 before mounting a rally to win. The Lady Bluejays had no problem in the second game, staking an 8-0 lead.

"We really had a nice comeback in the first game," said Charleston head coach Scott Crabtree. "This is a great win for us. We were pretty scratchy in practice and I wasn't sure what to expect. But we really played with some intensity and pulled out a big win."

Charleston's junior varsity lost 1-15, 10-15. The Lady Bluejays will play at Dexter on Thursday at 6 p.m.
