Barriner is back in front jury

Tuesday, November 9, 2004

COLUMBIA - The jury to hear the third trial for a man charged in the brutal murder of a woman and her granddaughter is being selected today.

A panel of jurors from Callaway County is being selected to hear the trial of Cecil Barriner in Columbia. The case is being heard by Judge Frank Conley.

Barriner is being retried for the 1996 double murder of Irene Sisk and her 19-year-old granddaughter, Candice. The women were fund stabbed to death in Mrs. Sisk's Tallapoosa home on Dec. 16, 1996.

New Madrid County Prosecuting Attorney Lewis Recker is seeking the death penalty in the case. In two previous cases, both of which were overturned, juries found Barriner guilty and imposed the death penalty.

The case was most recently overturned after defense attorneys presented two hairs which were found at the scene. The hairs were not introduced as evidence in the previous trials.

A spokesman with the prosecutor's office said the trial could be completed by the end of the week.

Recker will be assisted by Attorney Kevin Zoellner with the Missouri Attorney General's office.

Barriner is being defended by the Missouri Public Defender's office.
