SIKESTON - Dennis Bates, a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy, died following an automobile accident while in the service of his country, according to a telegram received last week by Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Bates of Sikeston, his parents.

SIKESTON - A son was born to Lt. and Mrs. Arch Russell Jr. Easter Sunday at a hospital in New York City. He is the first grandchild of Mr. and Mrs. Arch Russell of this city.
SIKESTON - Mrs. J.E. Childress of Sikeston and Mrs. John Gipson Jr. of University Center, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Milford Estes, formerly of Sikeston, have been selected to bake against 300 women in a bake contest at the Modern Living Show being held at the Keil Auditorium in St. Louis. Mrs. Childress will enter a spice cake and Mrs. Gipson's entry will be a banana dream cake.
BENTON - Firemen from Benton and New Hamburg responded to a truck fire on Interstate 55 about 4:28 a.m. today. The truck, loaded with lumber, was in the southbound lane of the interstate about 2 miles north of Benton. The vehicle is owned by Murle Dane Cox of Montezuma, Ind., and was driven by William Stephenson of Rockview, Ind. Only minor damage to the lumber was reported.

NEW MADRID - What a difference a couple of points made for the Sikeston track team Thursday afternoon at the Riverbend Track Classic at New Madrid County Central High School. The Bulldogs scored 101 points to edge Charleston by a single point to claim third place and were only four points behind Caruthersville 105 points for second place. The Eagles of NMCC proved to be the class of the field with 144 points.

SIKESTON - Piggly Wiggly store 97 recently conducted a "Fox and the Hound" coloring contest. Andrew Robinett of Sikeston won the top prize, a movie.
