COMMERCE - With the Fifth Army, Italy, Cpl. Herman L. Scherer, son of Mrs. Mary E. Scherer, who lives on Route 1, Commerce, has been promoted to sergeant.

SIKESTON - Halloween night, some 400 children and adults representing the 21 churches cooperating in the annual UNICEF campaign for funds sponsored by the United Church Women of Sikeston, collected a total of $606.55.

SIKESTON - The Department of Public Safety reports no major criminal activity and only two cases of vandalism on Halloween. "This is one of the quietest Halloweens in recent years," noted Sgt. Thurman Burns. Checks with the sheriff's department and police departments in the four-county area resulted in reports of only very minor vandalism during the night.

SIKESTON - Children attending Sikeston Head Start made a pre-Halloween trip though the Sikeston Factory Outlet Mall Friday morning. The youngsters, with their teachers, proudly showed off their Halloween attire as shoppers got a closer look.
