SIKESTON - The Missouri Press Association has announced its awards in its Better Newspaper Contest. The Daily Standard was awarded third place in typographical improvement for dailies and two of its staff received honorable mention. Leo Schade, photographer, got third place for best feature picture for dailies and honorable mention for news feature picture. Barney DuBois got honorable mention for the best sports picture for dailies.

NEW MADRID - Richard Phillips Jr. assumed the mayor's seat in New Madrid Monday night at a board of aldermen meeting. James H. Cravens gave up his seat as mayor after serving that position for 10 years.

SIKESTON - Nancy Williams, a kindergarten teacher for 28 years, is the recipient of the Phi Delta Kappa Southeast Missouri Chapter Outstanding Educator Award. The presentation was made by Darlene Sanders, PDK project chairman.


RISCO - The U.S. Achievement Academy has announced that Betsy Kay Fortner has been named a U.S. National Award Winner. Fortner attends Risco High School and was nominated by Charles Smith, school superintendent. She will appear in the U.S. Achievement Academy Yearbook, which is published nationally.
