SIKESTON -- A Sikeston man was arrested Wednesday for a shooting that occurred last week at a convenience store on West Malone.
Gailon Applewhite, 18, was arrested by the Sikeston Department of Public Safety on a Scott County warrant around 7 p.m. Wednesday at the 500 block of Ruth. Applewhite is facing charges of first degree assault and armed criminal action for the Sept. 23 shooting at the Cash Box.
Applewhite remains in the Scott County Jail at this time with bond set at $150,000 cash or surety.
The charges stem from an incident that began Thursday night when Lloyd Gilmore, 23, was playing a "crap" dice game in a stall of the car wash with sevearl subjects when he was assaulted from behind by two suspects.
Gilmore told officers he was defending himself when Applewhite pulled out a black handgun and fired several rounds at him. Gilmore then ran from the area and called police.
Gilmore was not struck by any bullets, but did receive minor injuries from the assault.
At approximately 10:30 p.m. Friday, Gilmore sought retaliation for the assault when an eastbound vehicle on Ruth Street, near the intersection with Clayton Street, was met by a vehicle in which Gilmore was a passenger. Gilmore exited through the passenger door and starting shooting at the vehicle, which reportedly contained one of the suspects from the previous night's assault.
Gilmore is still being sought by DPS.
In other DPS news, a stolen vehicle was recovered early today by DPS officers. According to reports, Kimberly Heuilar of 430 Daniel St. reported her 1994 Ford Escort stolen around 1 p.m. Wednesday. Heuilar's keys were in the vehicle.
Around 12:45 a.m. today a one-vehicle pursuit ensued on Kathleen and Scott Streets after a DPS officer located the stolen vehicle. The vehicular chase turned into a foot pursuit by three DPS officers. The suspect was caught and is currently refusing to give his identification. He is being held in the DPS jail at this time.
