Man arrested after apparent labor dispute

Sunday, January 18, 2004

BENTON - An argument at a construction site left one man seriously injured and his assailant in jail.

Clyde R. Staples, 37, Berryman, is in the Scott County Jail charged with second degree assault and armed criminal action. Bond is set at $150,000.

Scott County Sheriff Bill Ferrell said Staples allegedly went to a construction site east of Benton Friday afternoon and began questioning workers about non-union labor being used at the site.

Ferrell said it was reported that Staples had a conversation with Douglas J. Brucker, 51, from New Hamburg, who was working at the construction site. During the conversation Staples allegedly knocked Brucker to ground and began to repeatedly kick Brucker in the head and face area with steel-toed boots. Staples fled from the construction site when other workers arrived to assist Brucker.

According to the sheriff, Staples was apprehended by deputies in Miner a short time after the incident.

Brucker was transported to a hospital in Cape Girardeau with what appeared to be serious injuries.
