Showcasing the Bootheel

Sunday, September 19, 2004

Rodeo is over, but there is no time to rest at the Sikeston-Miner Convention and Visitor's Bureau!

Right after the 2004 Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo, it was off to the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia, where we worked the state's tourism booth.

Located in the agriculture building near the entrance, we had a steady stream of people coming by the booth. By the end of the day, we had given out over 600 Sikeston and Miner Visitors Guides to interested people. It was great getting to visit with people from all over the state and even some from the surrounding states. Also we visited with several folks from our area attending the fair.

After a very productive day, we headed to the Lake of the Ozarks for the annual Missouri Showcase. On Sunday, there was a workshop then we attended the Showcase where cities have the opportunity to "showcase" themselves to the Group Tour Leaders who had already completed a familiarization (FAM) tour of the west side of the state. We had seven-minute prescheduled appointments with Group Tour Leaders to discuss what our area has to offer. The appointments were set up after a Group Tour Leader received information we sent them.

We were able to make connections with 21 Group Tour Leaders who were interested in Southeast Missouri. Upon returning home, we sent them letters and follow-up leaflets to the business owners.

Already we have booked an outing for a group in April for the Dogwood Azalea Festival next year and several are interested in the rodeo.

Next year, the Missouri Showcase FAM tour will be on the east side of the state and we would love to host the group here. Last year we hosted a "Savor the Southeast" event at the Clinton Building and received rave reviews from those attending and recognition from the state. In 2005 we will offer the same event to a different set of tour group leaders as well as offering spoke and hub tours to the group, making our cities the hub for several tours.

The Sikeston-Miner Convention and Visitors Bureau is gathering information for the 2005 Calendar of Events, which has a deadline of Dec. 15. To get your event or attraction's information listed on our Website at www.visitsikeston-miner.com and printed and mailed to thousands of customers, please give us a call at 471-6362.
