Tuesday, April 30, 2002

CHARLESTON - The Sikeston tennis team improved to 10-1 on the season with an 8-1 victory against Charleston on Monday.

The Bulldogs have now won 10 straight matches after losing in the season-opener.

"We had a good day," said Sikeston head coach Brian James. "Charleston's got a very good team with a very good future. They're young and they're definitely going to be a force to be reckoned with in the next couple of years."

Sikeston swept the singles competition despite playing without No. 2 player Adam Hahs.

Stephen Pobst beat Alec Peterson 8-3; Ryne Vickery beat Kyle Kemp 8-4; Peter Jones beat Lee Hess 8-4; Marc Leible beat Jake Gerrard 8-2; Chris Robey beat Michael Rodriguez 8-3; and Ben Jones beat David Boyer 8-6.

In doubles, Vickery/Jones beat Hess/Kemp 8-5; Pobst/Ben Jones beat Peterson/Boyer 8-2; and Leible/Robey lost to Gerrard/Rodriguez 8-6.

"We've had a strong finish to the regular season," said James. "We just need to continue playing well heading into the district tournament next week."

Sikeston will play at Dexter today at 4 p.m.

Sikeston's Kyle Howard and Ryan Davis were singles winners on the junior varsity.

Howard and Kyle Weeks also teamed up for a doubles victory.
