CHAFFEE -- Chaffee won the 2002 Lady Devil Classic softball tournament with two come-from-behind wins on Friday, beating Delta in the first round 9-5 and Scott City 3-2 in the championship.
The Lady Devils were able to rally in the sixth inning of both games to pull out the victories.
"I'm just so proud of my girls for their effort today in both games," said Chaffee coach Mark Devenport. "Especially after our game with Kelly yesterday, I don't think we could've responded much better. It was just unbelievable. It was one of the few times where I walked into the huddle in left field after the game and couldn't talk. I was completely speechless, all I could say was 'Thank you'."
In the championship, the Lady Devils trailed Scott City ace Shana Wadlington 1-0 heading into the sixth.
After a leadoff walk and an infield error, Crystal Morgan put Chaffee on the board with a double that scored two runs. "That was a huge hit for us," said Devenport. "Before the inning started, we figured this was probably it. My kids went out and just got after it. The sixth was a good inning for us."
Ashley Graham followed with an RBI single to put Chaffee up 3-1. It turned out to be enough for the win.
Abby Walter picked up the win, improving her personal record to 4-0. She allowed three hits and five walks with seven strikeouts.
Graham finished the game 2-for-3. Other hits came from Abby Walter, Lindsey Everett and Brittany Bennett.
Wadlington went the distance for the Lady Rams, allowing six hits and five walks with seven strikeouts.
Amanda O'Brien, Kyla Smith and Rachel Noon had Scott City's three hits.
In the first round game against Delta, Chaffee had to overcome a four-run deficit to pull out the win. Delta's Sarah Cook allowed just two hits through the first five innings and the Lady Bobcats held a commanding 4-0 lead going into the sixth inning.
"With the time limit working, we didn't know if we could finish the inning and start another one," said Devenport. "I told the girls 'It's time'."
The Lady Devils responded with eight runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-4 lead.
Delta came back to score one run in the bottom of the frame. Chaffee scored one in the seventh, then shut down the Lady Bobcats in the bottom of the inning to seal the win.
"It was an awesome ballgame," said Devenport. "Sarah had us completely stymied through five innings."
Rebecca Cook came on in relief in the sixth inning and finished the game for Delta.
Chaffee's Shannon Hampton got the win, improving to 5-3. She gave up 10 hits and four walks with two strikeouts. Graham paced the offense, batting 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Hampton and Callie Meyr were both 2-for-4.
Kate Pfefferkorn hit a double and drove in three RBIs. For Delta, Martin, Andrea Dohogne and Krystal Burnett all finished with two hits.
Delta went on to beat Advance in the third place game.
