SALCEDO - Billy Hopper remained in the Sikeston General Hospital with serious injuries. He suffered a fractured rib when he was run over, head to foot, by a cotton roller Wednesday morning. Billy Hopper is the 5-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Grover Hopper.

MOREHOUSE - Voters overwhelmingly rejected annexation with the Richland R-1 School District here Tuesday. Just over half of the 800 eligible voters cast ballots; 364 voted no and 81 voted yes.

SIKESTON - Dan Norton has accepted appointment as Sikeston city attorney. City Manager Don Knabel said Norton began his duties Saturday. He replaced Jim Robison, who resigned.

SIKESTON - The Standard Democrat's May Calendar Girl is Jennifer Jensen. Miss Jensen, a senior at Sikeston High School, will attend the University of Missouri-Columbia following graduation. The daughter of Michael Jensen and Cheryl Jensen was a finalist in the 1991 Miss Sikeston contest.


CHARLESTON - Solid waste management and summer youth employment were among topics discussed Thursday by the County Commission, which also adopted two resolutions. Commissioners were informed by letter from the Bootheel Regional Planning Commission that the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has approved the formation of the Bootheel Solid Waste Management and DNR is appealing a Cole County Circuit Court ruling that nullified the district boundaries. A hearing on the appeal is set for May 11.


SIKESTON - Patients in the Missouri Delta Medical Center Skilled Nursing Facility recently participated in a pet therapy session.
