NEW MADRID -- The New Madrid County Library also participates in the state summer reading program. The County library system has one program for children ages 6-12, but in different locations and times.
New Madrid County's program begins June 27 and ends July 26. The times, days and locations for New Madrid County Public Library's reading program are as follows: 1 p.m. Tuesdays at Morehouse; 3 p.m. Tuesdays at Matthews; 1 p.m. Thursdays at New Madrid; 3 p.m. Thursdays at Portageville; 1 p.m. Fridays at Parma; and 3 p.m. Fridays at Gideon. Each session lasts an hour.
Like Sikeston, New Madrid County will also address specific subjects that are linked to the mystery theme. For example, one week will contain touch and feel mysteries. New Madrid County summer program presenter Melissa Pullum said one of the activities for that week might include putting different items in a box and having children feel them to guess what they are.
Pullum said prizes will be given away to children who attend. Parents can begin signing their children up anytime for the program by visiting in of the participating libraries mentioned above. Once signed up, their child will receive a program booklet. If the booklet is completed by the end of the program, the child will receive a certificate.
"The program will encourage kids to look at reading in other ways than just as a book," Pullum said. "It's also a great program for siblings to participate in because we have a lot of interaction."
