Rodeo comes to a close

SIKESTON -- The 2002 Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo finished up last night, with bare back, saddle bronc, bull riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, and barrel racing events.

On Friday, Sikeston's Carrie Potashnick thrilled the hometown crowd by winning the barrel racing competition with a time of 16.51 seconds. She edged out Gleason, Wis., native Kari Kois, who checked in at 16.57. Bobbi Joe Bohlman took third with a time of 16.75.

In the bare back riding event, J.D. Garrett Jr. kept his streak of strong showings at the Sikeston rodeo alive with a first place finish. He posted a score of 84. Cody Demers and Clint Cory tied for second with 80 points each.

Larry Sardvick came in fourth with 78 points.

In the saddle bronc competition, Camp Crook, S.D., native Jessie Bail took top honors with a score of 80. Tom Reeves took second with 75 points.

In bull riding, Colby Yates, of Azle, Tenn., took first with a score of 88. Tyler Fowler took second with an 85, followed by B.J. Schumacher in third with 82.

In calf roping, Bill Huber, of Albia, Iowa, took first with a time of 10.5 seconds. Chad Tibbs came in second at 10.9, and Tom Porter took third at 11.0.

In steer wrestling, Garet McMurry won with a time of 4.3 seconds. Grant Faulk took second at 4.7, and Phil Clayman took third at 4.9.
