JACKSON - Melba Thurston, 85, formerly of Bernie, died Sept. 2, 2004, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.
Born Sept. 20, 1918, in Bernie, daughter of the late Richard and Effie Adeline Jerls McCamish, she lived in Bernie most of her life before moving to Jackson eight years ago and had attended the Bernie Methodist Church. She was a cosmetologist and had owned and operated a beauty shop in Dexter. She and her husband also owned and operated the Farmers Insurance Group in Bernie for many years.
In 1933, she married H.A. Walker. She and C.E. "Red" Thurston were married July 12, 1964, and he preceded her in death on March 6, 1981.
Survivors include: one daughter, Fleta Sue Edmonds of St. Louis; one stepson, Kenneth Thurston of Bernie; four sisters, Velva Robisky of Dallas, Texas, Evelyn Robinson of Jackson, Mayola Gibson of DeSoto, Texas, and Martha Duffie-Reynolds of Bernie; and three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Two grandchildren, Deborah Lynn Edmonds and Douglas Thurston, also preceded her in death.
Visitation is from 11 a.m. Sunday until service time at 2 p.m. at Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. The Rev. Mack Williams of Jackson will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Bernie Cemetery.
