SIKESTON -- The Heartland AAU Wrestling team started their season off on Dec. 13 at the ABC Invitational in St. Ann.
Sikeston wrestlers who placed first in the tournament were Blake Angle, Darin Dicus and Stephen Wheatley.
Dustin Ruby and Kenny Moy took second. Gage Barber placed fourth, Cody Middleton took fifth and Greg Crider came in sixth.
Brent Robinett, Trevor Wheatley and Matthew Schmidt all placed eighth.
The team traveled to Lafayette High School on Dec. 21 and wrestled with some the best wrestlers in the state. It was a very large tournament with over 1,000 wrestlers participating. The Heartland Wrestlers made a very good impact for Southeast Missouri with 10 placing in the top three of their weight classes.
Ruby came home with a championship, and so did Dicus and Wheatley. The team also had strong finishes from Garrett and Cody Middleton, both taking second place.
Matthew Woodard took second in his weight class, Gage Barber, Trevor Wheatley and Greg Crider all finished third. Jason Brown took fourth place.
The team is preparing for the Missouri National Challenge Jan 3, one of the largest tournaments in the nation.
The club is for ages 5-13 and currently has over 35 members.
