SIKESTON - The $90,000 expansion at the Community Sheltered Workshop will enable employers of the handicapped to expand its wooden reel production. Construction on the new facility should be completed sometime in May, according to Harvey Cooper, director of the workshop. "This expansion furthers our desire to be a viable business in the community." Funds for the building were raised through Scott County's mill tax, which was passed in 1975 to supply the workshop and/or group housing for handicapped individuals in the county. The workshop employs about 100 handicapped persons from Scott, Mississippi and New Madrid counties. The business supplies the reels, pallets and packaging for area businesses.
NEW MADRID - A tractor on Interstate 55, near New Madrid, stopped traffic for more than an hour. The accident occurred when a tractor trailer truck hauling over 41 head of cattle slammed into the rear of a military transport vehicle. Both vehicles were incinerated.
