SIKESTON - The Sikeston Senior American Legion Post 114 baseball team improved to 4-1 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of the St. Louis Cyclones Legion squad.
Sikeston won the first game 10-7 and won the nightcap 9-3 on Sunday at VFW Stadium.
"You've got to be pleased any time you can get a sweep," said Sikeston head coach Charlie Dye. "All the kids got a chance to play and everybody contributed so you've got to be happy with that."
In the first game, Sikeston trailed 2-0 before exploding for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Lance Rhodes broke a 2-2 tie with a sacrifice fly. Scotty Keenan followed that up with a two-run double to make it 5-2. Blake DeWitt then hit a three-run homer to cap the inning.
Sikeston added two more runs in the sixth on DeWitt's second homer of the day, this one a two-run shot.
Jake Kimball picked up the win in four innings of work. Rhodes and Adam Garrett pitched in relief.
DeWitt went 2-4 with two home runs and five RBIs. Mark Adam Wade went 2-3 with an RBI.
Others were Garrett (1-2, RBI), Jacob Priday (1-4), Nathan Eaves (1-3), Andrew Lambert (1-3, RBI), Keenan (1-2, 2B, 2 RBIs) and Brad Deere (1-1).
"Blake had a monster day -- that kind of anchored the offense," said Dye. "But we had hitting up and down the lineup. All in all we hit well all day. Even most of our outs were hit hard right at people."
In the second game, Sikeston scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning to lead 7-1.
Post 114 added two more runs in the third inning to lead 9-2.
Keenan picked up the win in 2 2/3 innings. Drew Lawrence pitched 2 1/3 innings and Wade pitched two innings in relief.
"Scotty, Drew and Mark Adam gave us a solid day on the mound," said Dye. "All three came in and threw the ball really well."
The trio limited the Cyclones to six hits.
DeWitt and Adam Miller each went 3-4 with two RBIs.
Others were Lambert (1-1, RBI), Garrett (1-3), Priday (1-3, RBI), Kimball (1-3, RBI), Rhodes (1-2), Deere (1-3, RBI) and Dustin Kelley (RBI).
Sikeston will host Cape Ford & Sons Legion today at 6:30 p.m. at VFW Stadium.
