Preliminary hearing set in murder case

CHARLESTON -- A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 20 for a man charged in the murder of a woman and her 3-year-old son.

Andre Clark, 41, of Charleston who is charged with two counts of first degree murder, three counts of armed criminal action and one count of first degree assault, waived his right to a formal arraignment Wednesday. Associate Judge T. Lynn Brown, accepted the waiver in Division II of Mississippi County Circuit Court and set the preliminary hearing date.

Clark was charged on Oct. 20 following a four-month investigation in the June 16 double homicide of Lazan T. Balentine, 32, and Kyri Balentine, 3, mother and son, of Charleston. He was arrested in Chicago by the Illinois State Police on June 20, following the investigation by the DDCC Troop E Criminal Unit.

The Balentines were beaten to death with what appeared to be a blunt object at their home at 802 South Grand Ave., along with Balentine's other son, Kyri Balentine, 4. Kyri received very serious injuries and was taken to a St. Louis hospital for treatment.
