DEXTER -- A Dexter man died in a house fire late Monday.
According to Dexter Fire Chief Al Banken, around 11:50 p.m. the Dexter Fire Department responded to a house fire on County Road 703.
"We were told a man was in the house, but we couldn't find him anywhere upon numerous phone calls by family members that he was in the house," Banken recalled. "We made a search after the fire was leveled and still didn't find a victim."
Banken said the fire marshal and Stoddard County coroner called the fire department to review the remains and make a determination. Remains were removed, and the fire marshal and coroner pulled the body of Terry Montgomery, 44, from the debris, Banken explained.
"We also had problems finding his (Montgomery's) son, but thank God he showed up later," Banken noted.
Banken said the cause of the fire is unknown and probably will remain undetermined.
