Your view: Save the cemeteries

Sunday, November 30, 2003

As a genealogist I find the older the cemetery the better. I am also a descendent from the Boutwell family of Scott County. My wife and I are honored by the citizens of Sikeston every time we come for a visit (four to five times a year). We are treated with the highest level of courtesy one could expect.

However, it concerns me when we hear of some old cemetery being "plowed" under so the farmer can raise additional crops. This problem is not widespread but I know of two cemeteries east of Miner in which one has been totally destroyed and the other is all but gone.

If one could find documented proof of these cemeteries then efforts could begin to restore them.

I look forward to our next visit to the area. Anyone wanting to share information can contact us at 312 W. 29th Ave., Stillwater, OK. 74074 or srhgkh@quixnet.net
