SIKESTON -- Market Place took third place in the regular season, then went on to win the year-end tournament in the Junior Babe Ruth League this year.
The squad had to win back-to-back games, battling through 12 innings in the oppressive heat to claim the championship.
To make things worse, just seven players showed up for the title game, and the 15-year-old team was forced to pick up a 13-year-old.
Around 11:30 p.m., Market Place sealed a win over US Bank to win the Junior Babe tournament title.
"We won the championship, but the players were too hot and tired to celebrate," said Market Place head coach Jaye Butler. "We had a really good year, everybody played together. It was a good group of kids."
Scott Gardner played first base for Market Place, Jordan Phenicie was at second, Clay Lincoln was at short and Kyle Rodgers was at third.
Derris Butler played third, catcher and pitched. Ryan Dicus pitched and caught. Ross Merideth pitched and played shortstop.
Kalub Dykstra caught and played outfield. Chris Matthews, Zachary Brooks and James Bonner played in the outfield. Butler, Dicus, Merideth and Rodgers were all named to the all-star team.
The Junior Babe regular season championship was won by First National Bank.
