SIKESTON - Mrs. Cecil Link hosted a surprise birthday party for her sister, Mrs. Robin West.

SIKESTON - The congregation of the First Christian Church unanimously called for the Rev. Duward Penry to succeed the Rev. Myron Neal as pastor. The Rev. Penry currently serves in the position as minister of the church.

SIKESTON - Twenty-five area businesses who deal with farmers, their products and services aired problems they face in dealing with the issue during an agribusiness meeting conducted by the State Chamber of Commerce. Don Spalding, agriculture chairman of the state chamber, conducted a session of open discussion.

SIKESTON - Sikeston has been awarded a Community Development Block Grant of $259,000 to construct a street which allows the expansion of Hedrick Concrete. The grant is for 90 linear feet of street west from Main Street.

SCOTT CITY - Officials say the federal government should be held responsible for needed improvements on the Commerce-Birds Point Levee in Southeast Missouri. Authorities spoke at a hearing Monday before the Mississippi River Commission. Aboard the Corps of Engineers' motor vessel Mississippi, at the Southeast Missouri Regional Port near Scott City, authorities said federally funded levee improvements on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River have put added pressure on levees on the Missouri side.

SIKESTON - Melissa Thomas, daughter of Donnie and Carla Thomas of East Prairie, is the queen of the Little Miss Winter Princess Pageant for ages 4 years through preschool. Second alternate is Stephanie Martin, daughter of Reggie and Hope Martin of East Prairie. Brooke Smith, daughter of Michael and Pamela Smith of Sikeston, is first alternate.
