Looking Back in Time at Feb. 28

Friday, February 28, 2003

SIKESTON - The official date of the opening of the USO center will be next Saturday afternoon. The Sikeston USO center is located is the Matthews Building on South Kingshighway, formerly occupied by Ward's Store.

BERNIE - Bernie has not had a state contender in high school basketball for years but they have one now and are going all out. Seniors from Bernie High School will play Advance for the right to represent Southeast Missouri in the Class M state tourney in Columbia. They are Robert Banks, Connie Bennett, Gary Murphy, Wayne Treadway, Jim Gibson, Larry Putnam and Jerry White.

SIKESTON - The presses at the Daily Standard have been busy this week as the first sections of the 28th Annual Progress edition were printed. Staff members have been working since December putting together information about the progress made by area businesses, industries and communities in order to provide readers with a comprehensive view of 1982.

SIKESTON - Being a teenager can be difficult; there are many problems they must face today, but for two Sikeston youths, the teenage world has had an exciting introduction. Kylie and Mandy, the 12-year-old twins of Richard and Karan Wibbenmeyer, were interviewed Feb. 9 for the March edition of People Weekly magazine. The idea for the interview stemmed from Chelsea Clinton's 13th birthday, which she will celebrate Sunday. Because adolescence involves many changes, People sent reporters across the United States to talk to girls who were born Feb. 27,, 1980. Reporter Mary Harrison, a former Sikeston teacher, and a People photographer arrived at the Wibbenmeyer home at 7 a.m. to start the day with the twins.
