Sikeston resident killed in accident

Sunday, February 23, 2003

POPLAR BLUFF -- A Sikeston teenager died Friday afternoon in a work-related accident.

Jacob "Jake" Beck, 19, an employee of Backyard Buildings located in Sikeston, was unloading a portable storage building near the intersection of Pine and Gum Streets in Poplar Bluff about 3 p.m. Friday.

"The best we could tell, he called his boss and said he was having trouble with the 33-foot trailer. After he unloaded the portable storage building, it appeared that he crawled between the upright part of the trailer that raises and the metal frame of the trailer, where he was working on the device that raises and lowers the trailer. With tools in hand, he loosened the hydraulic line through the trailer. At this time, it lowered the trailer down on him and by doing that, it trapped him between the frame and movable parts of trailer," said Butler County Deputy Coroner Bruce Goin.

Goin said Beck died instantly.

A man across the street noticed the truck sitting there for quite some time and when he checked on it discovered the body. A call was made to 911 around 3:45 p.m.

Beck was pronounced dead by Goin at Three Rivers North Campus in Poplar Bluff.
