SIKESTON -- A man is in custody after a two-hour standoff with police in which he was holding a hostage.
The incident occurred at around 7:30 p.m. Thursday after officers with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety observed a subject wanted in connection with several traffic violations and leaving the scene of an accident in the 200 block of Luther Street.
A foot pursuit with the suspect began and he ran into a storage building behind a residence on Dixie Street. Officers pursuing the man were advised by the suspect that he had a woman inside the building and if any attempts were made to gain entry, he would harm her.
The department's hostage negotiating team and Special Operations Group was called to handle the situation. Negotiations were started and assisted by the Scott County Sheriff Bill Ferrell who had also arrived at the scene. After approximately two hours, the suspect surrendered to officers and was arrested.
The name is being withheld until warrants are issued in connection with both incidents. The suspect remains in custody in the Sikeston DPS holding facility pending transport to Scott County Jail.
