LEOPOLD -- Chaffee won its first game of the season Tuesday night, beating Leopold 48-47 in overtime.
"It was pretty exciting to win," said Chaffee head coach David Mirly. "All year long the kids kept working hard, even though we were 0-10. This will be a big boost for us. There were a lot of chances for us to get down and get frustrated, but we kept working hard and we pulled it out."
The Red Devils trailed 33-31 heading into the final period, but outscored Leopold 13-11 in the fourth to force overtime. Both teams scored three points in the bonus, then Chaffee's James Reischman was fouled at the buzzer attempting a shot.
He hit his first of two free throws, giving the Red Devils their first victory. Reischman finished the game with 17 points. Sam Burnett contributed 16 in the win.
"Sam hit some big shots all throughout the game," said Mirly. "He had nine points in the fourth quarter alone which kept us in the ballgame. James' ball-handling skills were the key for us tonight and he was able to score on backdoor layups and penetration."
For Leopold, Josh Vandeven led the way with 17 points.
Chaffee (1-10) will travel to Greenville on Thursday at 6 p.m.
