Wednesday, January 29, 2003

CHARLESTON -- Four Charleston players finished in double figures as the Bluejays cruised past Kelly on Tuesday night, 76-41.

"I was a little concerned because we hadn't played in 11 days, but we played well," said Charleston head coach Danny Farmer.

Ashton Farmer led the way with 16 points, followed by Kewain Gant with 11, Trentez Lane with 11 and Marcus Biles with 10. Joshua Strayhorn contributed nine points. Danny Farmer Jr. hit two 3-pointers and finished with eight.

"That's what we like, we want to spread the wealth," said Farmer. "It's going to be hard to stop us if we continue to do that."

Charleston raced out to a 24-6 lead and never looked back, outscoring Kelly 14-13 in the second period and 25-9 in the third. Both sides scored 13 in the final period.

For Kelly, Chris Romas led the way with 13 points.

Charleston (15-3) will travel to Kennett on Friday, while Kelly (7-9) plays host to Sikeston. In Tuesday's junior varsity game, Charleston defeated Kelly 66-63, snapping the Hawks' 12-game winning streak.

GIDEON -- Greg Landers scored 25 points and Kyle Carlisle added 13 as Risco defeated Gideon 66-57 on Tuesday night.

The Tigers jumped out to a 17-6 lead and outscored Gideon 15-14 in the second period to take a 32-20 halftime lead.

Gideon rallied in the second half, but Risco finished strong in the fourth quarter to claim the nine-point victory.

Behind Landers and Carlisle, Luke Carter scored 10 points. For Gideon, Blake Davis scored a game-high 26 points and Chris Woodall contributed 14.

"This was a big win for us," said Risco head coach Brandon Blankenship. "They beat us earlier in the season. It was a total team effort, everybody contributed."

Risco (8-6) will travel to Southland on Friday night.
