MATTHEWS - Hilyard Winters Sr., 72, died Feb. 17, 2003, at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.
Born Sept. 23, 1930, in Tallahatchie County, Miss., son of the late Bozie and Georgia Henry Winters, he retired from farming in 1995 and was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church of Tippo, Miss.
His wife, Mattie Adams Winters, survives of Portageville.
Other survivors include: 11 daughters, Georgia Higgs of Malden, Liza Winters of Chicago, Ill., Mae Winters of Roselle, Ill., Virginia Poindexter, Rosemary Winters, Lena Winters, Sheila Winters, Tina Woods and Alice Woods of Memphis, Tenn., Mattie Winters of St. Louis and Georgia Winters of Milwaukee, Wis.; three sons, Willie Woods of Memphis, Hilyard Winters Jr. of Licking and Issac Winters of Tiptonville; one brother, Jessie Winters of Lilbourn; six sisters, Annie R. Sanders and Shirley Winters of Charleston, Miss., Susie Brandon of Indianola, Miss., Blachie Purnell of Greenwood, Miss., Mildred Winters of Carrollton, Miss., and Callie McShane of Memphis; and 42 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bozie Winters, Johnny Winters and Willie Winters; and one sister, Iona Winters.
Visitation is from noon Saturday until service time at 1 p.m. at Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston. Robert Poindexter will officiate.
Burial will follow in Simmons Burial Park at Catron.
Pallbearers will be: Jessie Winters, Willie Woods, Willie Higgs, Jessie Lee Willis, Timothy Sanders, Jake Hunt and Terrell Winters.
