SIKESTON -- In hopes to bring closure to family and friends, the Sikeston Department of Public Safety issued a release stating the Aug. 27 school bus accident that claimed the life of Kristen Harris was officially ruled an accident.
The announcement came from Sikeston Department of Public Safety Director Drew Juden Tuesday afternoon after an investigation was conducted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol Crash Team.
According to the report put together by the Highway Patrol and eye witness accounts, the bus driver had stopped the bus and picked up children at the intersection of Kiwanis and Jackson streets. Kristen was not at the intersection at the time to catch the bus and then ran after the bus when it pulled away from the stop.
The report listed no contributing factors to the driver or mechanical condition of the bus and stated that it was a tragic accident.
In the report, DPS extended its sympathy to the Harris family and hopes the release of the findings might help them have some closure.
Sikeston Superintendent Steve Borgsmiller and the school staff were commended by school board members for their effective management during the accident at Tuesday's Board of Education meeting as well.
