DEXTER - A crowd estimated at 1,200 looked on as J.C. Bennett flew an airplane through the ribbon spanning Highway 60 to officially open the new sections north of here. Ceremonies were held at the interchange of U.S. Highway 60 and Missouri Highway 25, with a list of distinguished visitors headed by Gov. John Dalton.

FOR CHAFFEE, Ark. - Members of Company C, 1140th Engineers of Sikeston and Portageville, spent the last few days digging trenches, clearing mine fields, destroying obstacles and getting ready for an assault. The activities were a part of "Operation Scarlet Sabre," one of the biggest National Guard field training exercises since World War II.

SIKESTON - Businesses and union workers are at odds about whether Congress should be involved in rail strike negotiations. A spokesman for Noranda Aluminum Inc. in Marston said his company, like many other area businesses, believes Congress must intervene on this matter and get the rail cars moving again.


SIKESTON - After mulling over portions of the 1992-93 city budget for the last few weeks, the city council approved it during its Wednesday morning meeting. Under the budget outline, the total revenue estimate was calculated at $5,149,739 with a total fund balance estimated at $3,187,374. Three public hearings were held prior to the presentation.


SIKESTON - In Wednesday's league action, Kiwanis had a close call, but came out ahead over the Jaycees, 11-10.
